The deadline for our contest is rapidly approaching. February 1! We want you read your best writing. We want you to win, so we can publish your work and give you $500.

Two days left!
(PS Issue 51 is being designed by the guy who designed the “write like a motherfucker” mugs. He’s done lots of other awesome things, Lucky Peach and The Believer and lots of gorgeous books, but I discovered this thing about the mugs in the middle of our staff meeting this week and reacted most unprofessionally.)

Alright folks, it’s time! Our 2013 contest runs through February 1. Submit your very best fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. We can’t wait to read it.

The Columbia Journal writing contest ends SOON. Enter! Share this! Do both! (Ok that messes up your odds a tiny bit, but it’s really good karma.)

this poverty  (from Sappho)

so blessed to sit with you
is anyone up close
bathed in the cool sweet silver
bells of your voice

and your laugh
like water over small
wet fresh stones
hits my chest like a cannon
(relief to give over to)
knocks the wind out of me
from way over there
and my breath
and my voice
are gone all gone

my tongue swells to fill
(heavy) my lonely mouth
and this fire flares up
under my skin
a little prickle
an inferno
refuses to burn me up and away

the world drowns ink black
and a roar fills my ears
(washed away
an angry ocean)

salt sweat pours down me and
in a trembling
vanishes my blood
I am paler than grass
just a little short of death!
or so I seem (at least to myself)
any poverty

Who are your favorite poets?

jamesgetsinshape:

I need something new to read. Go, Tumbleverse. Go.

I recommended Vasko Popa. Your turn.

EDIT: The Little Box is about Katamari, isn’t it. Shit.

Feb 5

I was at the gym.

At 6pm on Superbowl Sunday.

With cat hair all over my gym pants.

Listening to Erasure.

And then I dropped my phone on the treadmill.

I felt so awesome.

So awesome.

So awesome.
