We got a narrator over her.

We’re thrilled to announce Neil deGrasse Tyson will narrate the Museum’s newest Space Show, premiering this fall at the Hayden Planetarium.

Astrophysicist, prolific science communicator, and director of the Hayden Planetarium, Dr. Tyson is the recipient of 18 honorary doctorate degrees and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest award given by NASA to a non-government citizen. Dr. Tyson has also written 10 popular science books as well as many essays for the public, and is currently working on a 21st-century reboot of Carl Sagan’s landmark television series Cosmos: A Personal Journey.

Stay tuned for more updates on our fifth Space Show.

Making decisions as an adult is tough (and those decisions could make your life better or worse), but they’re your decisions to make. Who you sleep with, where you move, and even how you trim your body hair - your choices and yours alone.

Please do not approach your life as something that requires list-reading. Approach it as something that you want to be wonderful and fulfilling and do your best to make it happen.

A depiction of our solar system from the Pioneer plaque. Designed and created by Carl and Linda Sagan, this and a few other images simply showing human knowledge of our solar system and universe was aboard the Pioneer 10 spacecraft; one of the first man made object to leave our solar system. (I decided to give pluto love because the poor guy deserves a break. It’s not his fault he hasn’t been able to orbit the sun even once since his discovery!)

Done by Tony at Urban Art Tattoo in Mesa, AZ.

I was all tattoo brother! tattoo brother! but this Pluto thing. I mean, it’s accurate to the Pioneer plaque, so I don’t object to its inclusion. On your arm. But we have to let it go like we did the Brontosaurus. Pluto is not a planet. You can have eight planets, or you can have five hundred. That’s the line.

But that’s a really lovely tattoo.

This morning I found a tick on my hip.
It took me an hour to remember I’d spent Sunday in Connecticut, and we’d played Kubb in my friends’ backyard. I guess the tick climbed up my dress. At least my bed isn’t independently tick-infested.

It’s a little weird for a tick to latch on for 36 hours, but my bed being independently tick-infested would be weirder.

I’m still a student, so I had to go to health services. Campus was green and empty and smelled like mulch. The doctor gave me one-dose antibiotics.

I will be living on yogurt, kombucha, and kimchee for the next little while. Sorry, microbiome.

scienceisbeauty:

Katie Coyle: Hello, Tess! Very excited to be discussing this television show and my FEELINGS with you. First of all: how long have you been a roomfriend?

Tess McGeer: Woo, okay! So, I’ve been watching New Girl from the beginning—I’ve always…

This conversation captures a lot of what I love about New Girl. My one big point of contention is when they say that most of the show is low-stakes. Part of what makes the show brilliant is that almost everything is extraordinarily high-stakes to the characters.

Some other parts of what make the show brilliant are: Liz Meriwether, Fat Schmidt (and how skinny Schmidt became Fat Schmidt when he was back with his Fat Schmidt girlfriend, that was fucking genius), and Nick Miller Nick Miller Nick Miller.

follow-up gif of my feelings after the amazing readings at...

follow-up gif of my feelings after the amazing readings at Jami’s launch last week.

Booksellers, librarians, and nerds: Can anyone recommend a great audiobook for a road trip?...

Booksellers, librarians, and nerds: Can anyone recommend a great audiobook for a road trip? We’ll have thirty hours of driving in one week, and not nearly enough podcasts. We both like sci-fi - some recent mutual favorites have been A Canticle for Leibowitz, The Sparrow, The Windup Girl, and Oryx & Crake - and I feel like a YA book could be especially good for listening, as long as it’s not too romance-based. On the other hand, some interesting nonfiction (if Tom Standage’s new book were out, for example) could be great. What would you recommend?

Pimmmmm’ssss cupppppppppps (at Milford Harbor)

Pimmmmm’ssss cupppppppppps (at Milford Harbor)

Photo

"Another explanation is that we were raised up from chemosynthetic life in the deep ocean to become..."

“Another explanation is that we were raised up from chemosynthetic life in the deep ocean to become photosynthetic life at the top. Having ascended from the eternal night we cannot stop ourselves from heading toward the light. We are moths in the thrall of the sun and the stars, shedding off darkness. That is our instinct, but our conscious nature is also to be drawn to the unknown. We want to know what is behind the wood, what the next valley looks like, and the valley beyond that. We want to know what is in the sky and what is behind the sky. These have been our obsessions since our beginnings, yet the curiosity does not extend to the ocean. We forget there is so much darkness in our world, and to be out on a beach is to be lucky.”

- from SUBMERGENCE by J.M.
